REDX WeSchool

REDX (Rethinking Engineering Design eXecution) is a unique, bottom-up, co-innovation platform designed to solve the most pressing challenges within our communities.

REDX WeSchool’ is an Innovation Lab at S. P. Mandali’s Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (WeSchool), is a vibrant ecosystem of Innovation, rolling out new and innovative commercial and citizen-based technologies to create a framework that supports wide-ranging needs of urban populations and corporations. We strive to go beyond known boundaries and disciplines of technology innovation for social impact.


The focus is to leverage:

  • Imaging and digital technologies, ultra low-cost hardware, mobile platforms and Internet of Things,
  • Design skills like Design Thinking, Design Research,  Design ethnography,  concept prototyping, Design validation, Localisation, Authentic design and Brand Storytelling
  • Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Machine Learning and Computer Vision to develop tech-enabled innovations

The Lab integrates engineers, scientists, domain experts (doctors, urban planners, civic officials, etc), designers, management experts, entrepreneurs and implementation partners into a robust innovation community.

The Lab was set up in May 2015 at Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research (WeSchool, Mumbai) which is acclaimed as one of the fastest transforming B-School. It is focused towards shaping management professionals who can bring about positive transformation at their workplace and the society at large. Ranked among the top 21 B- Schools in India (12th rank in private school in Times of India  B-School) in their Best B-Schools Survey,  the Institute has recently conferred the BMA Best Management Institute of the year award for its contribution to management education. WeSchool is also awarded Autonomy Status for all its University Program.

The REDX WeSchool Lab  in collaboration with REDX, a peer-to-peer invention platform by Prof. Ramesh Raskar (Associate Professor, P.I. of Camera Culture Group at MIT Media Lab), MIT Emerging Worlds Special Interest Group (SIG) and Tata Trusts.

The projects selected to be developed at REDX WeSchool are sector-agnostic; proposing unique, disruptive solutions with huge social impact. Our innovations have so far attempted to solve real-life challenges from multiple areas like medical/ healthcare industry, civic issues like urban development & waste management and financial inclusion.

The Lab has been able to achieve significant results in

  • Sustainable, quickly scalable health-monitoring & disease-screening innovations
  • Meticulously designed human-centric products
  • Data analysis and AI algorithms producing actionable insights that address genuine problems impacting billions.

The work has been recognized with multiple publications in top-tier international conferences and journals (IEEE, ACM, SPIE etc), applied for registered  Intellectual property in India (Industrial Design rights, Patents), and as commercial products in our communities (via spinning off Startups, and licensing-out products).


Dermascape Clip-onDermascapeSpectrometer

The Dermascape tools comprise of a mobile phone clip-on and a spectrometer that aims to visualize skin conditions on smart phones and differentially diagnose skin conditions using fluorescence spectroscopy of skin. While spectrometry is being validated in clinical studies, the mobile clip-on is being extensively used by dermatologists. The hardware is supported by a companion app that allows capturing of magnified, high-quality images of skin lesions, annotate, store and access them along with patient data whenever needed.

Auriscape, an Ear Imaging Tool is an innovative device to image conditions and infections of the middle ear. It comprises of a mobile-phone compatible (OTG supported) camera that helps in visualizing middle ear and screening for various ear infections. A companion mobile phone application helps practitioners keeping patient records, documenting changes over time and annotate images/ videos of the ear.

Magvue is a portable setup consisting of a mobile clip-on that turns a smartphone into an affordable video magnifier for low vision people and a smartphone mounting stand. Currently, the hardware provides 12.5X optical magnification. It also has a companion mobile application that leverages the computational capabilities of the smartphone and provides additional contrast options along with digital magnification. This project is being done in collaboration with Lotus College of Optometry.

Urvolution: (Urban – Evolution) The Artificial Intelligence-based technique that assists urban planners and policymakers in making decisions related to urban growth. It can track a region’s growth history using satellite images and extract growth patterns for rapidly-expanding cities. By mapping the changes in buildings and roads over time, policymakers can come up with scores related to socio-economic parameters, actionable insights and predictive measures for urbanization.


Bettabins is a range of conscientiously designed Storage artifacts that enables you to store dry waste generated in your space in an elegant, hassle-free manner, thereby promoting segregation of waste into wet waste and dry waste at source.

Legal Document Summarizer

An Artificial Intelligence based assistive summarization tool for legal experts that provides an overview of legal documents such as case proceedings, case judgment, etc.

This will help legal experts in:

  •  Reducing time and effort required in creating case summaries.
  •  Refer, cite and analyze cases quickly.
  •  Improve case summary accuracy.

Apnea Rest Analysis Mask (ARAM) is a wearable device for at-home screening and monitoring of Sleep Apnea. It monitors five most crucial parameters of subject’s sleep that can aid in faster and reliable identification of risks for Sleep Apnea. Validated for its efficiency and user experience, it has been appreciated by the scientific community. The research on Design and preliminary evaluation of a wearable device for mass-screening of sleep apnea was published at  38th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC’16).

Cardio24 is a web-platform based screening tool built around continuous ECG monitoring devices (wearables in particular) to screen for cardiovascular diseases. Its algorithm has been validated against the data from gold-standard diagnostic systems. It has been made open-source for the community to use as per their application needs. Analysis algorithm (in Matlab) to label ECG data and detect abnormalities in the signal:

SenseCam is a real-time camera-based emotion detection system. It is a non-invasive, privacy-preserving system, which will be able to detect facial expressions, HRV (heart rate variability), stress and other human vitals. It can aid Autistic children to learn expressing emotions and needs, and also help monitor patients in hospitals.
